Big Dipper - The Ham and Cheese EP 2020

Big Dipper - The Ham and Cheese EP 2020

The Ham and Cheese EP

I’ve been a fan of Big Dipper since 2013. It wasn’t until I came across his music video Lookin, from the LATE BLOOMER album (2018), that I really got to appreciate who he was as an artist. Like most of his YouTube videos, Lookin was accompanied by beefy men, over the top choreography, and sexually explicit lyrics. What’s not to love? As an artist, it’s hard not to see Big Dipper as a testament to confidence and body positivity. His music resonates with me and I’m sure other gays in the community who don’t look like Andrew Christian models, nor want to.

A self proclaimed bear, Big Dipper has performed at some of the biggest Pride festivals across the United States. He is quickly becoming a gay icon as a rapper, comedian, and entertainer. When I learned he was putting out an EP for 2020, just in time for Pride, I had to get my hands on a copy.

The Ham and Cheese EP, consists of 5 uber upbeat tracks — sure to get you on your feet, shakin that ass! Produced with the help of So Drove and featuring Boy Radio and TT THE ARTIST, this album is quickly becoming one of my favorites of 2020.

With the way things look, we may all be celebrating Pride from home due to COVID-19. If that’s the case, be sure to make The Ham and Cheese EP part of your Pride playlist (Available on iTunes, Apple Music, and Spotify).

I talked with Big Dipper about The Ham and Cheese EP, and all the tea got spilt!

Pinkies up, and sip!…

Weslo: Ok, so these are some bangers! Perfect for dance clubs and festivals. Was that the goal?

Big Dipper: After my album LATE BLOOMER came out in 2018 I immediately wanted to start writing music again. As an independent artist, it's really a whole process to release music, especially with a video and a press rollout. The 2018 album took about 3 years to put together, so I wanted to write something faster that I could release quicker. I partnered with my friend So Drove on all five songs. We worked for about two months once or twice a week and wrote a handful of songs. Then we chose the 5 best tracks for the EP. The goal was to just write good music with my friend.

Weslo: How would you describe The Ham and Cheese EP to your fans?

Big Dipper: 13 minutes of greatness!! There isn't a dull moment, really... all the songs are good, and basically there is something for everyone. A rap song, a pop song, a rock song, a dance song, a club song. We made sure to give you everything you need.

Weslo: The title track Ham and Cheese, I couldn't help but notice the baseball bat reference, was that a nod to the Peanut Butter Jelly Time, the classic youtube video or Family Guy?

Big Dipper: It's definitely a nod to the song "Peanut Butter Jelly Time." That was such an anthem when I was growing up. Basically it was like an analog meme in high school. We would all sing the hook and dance with one another and it was so infectious. That has stuck with me my whole life. I just love how campy those lyrics are and I wanted to pay homage to that idea and flip it to be a little more my brand.

Weslo: Did you use this quarantine time to record and mix The Ham and Cheese EP?

Big Dipper: No. We made all of this music last summer, but I'm really slow at releasing things. Once I finish music I tend to sit on it for a bit...then once I'm ready to release it, I want to make a music video or two and figure out all the details. I don't have a huge machine behind me, so it always feels super slow, but I like to do it my way. The plan was always summer 2020 for a release, but I wasn't planning on only promoting from home. I had a bunch of gigs lined up for Prides and other parties and I was excited to perform all the music from the EP live for an audience and share it with everyone.

Weslo: Late Bloomer had 12 songs, any reason this is a shorter album?

Big Dipper: This is an EP so we never set out to make a full length album. When I was making LATE BLOOMER I put so much pressure on myself to try and make everything perfect. I would go back and redo vocals and mixes and just second guess everything. I wanted to make music with a more carefree attitude; just write stuff for fun and put it out. That's what THE HAM AND CHEESE EP is.

'The Ham And Cheese EP' out now! Follow IG/Twitter @bigdipperjelly Music by @SoDrove Featuring: @BoyRadio DP: Kain O'Keefe Editor: Julien Lormant Colorist: D...

Weslo: What was it like working with Boy Radio and TT The Artist? I gotta say Like This was a favorite.

Big Dipper: I love both of them. The collaborations were pretty easy because they are both pros. TT is out here in Los Angeles so we got to record together which was awesome. She is a total powerhouse and sounds so good on the track. Boy Radio did his vocals in New York, but then came to LA to shoot the music video for LIKE THIS. I love his vibe, and he's been so supportive of the music video and the EP release. I have had some great features on my releases in the past, but these are some of the best.

Weslo: I have to ask, was BACK UP OFF ME about anyone in particular? Spill the Tea!

Big Dipper: As I started writing that song, I was definitely pulling from some specific experiences and certain "frenemies" in my life. But as the song took shape, the lines blurred a bit and now it's more generally an anthem for all the haters out there. My hope is a lot of people can relate to being underestimated and having people talk shit about them. We also shot a music video for BACK UP OFF ME that will hopefully come out this summer. It's so fucking cool, I can't wait to share that with everyone too.

Weslo: What are you most excited about doing once this quarantine is over?

Big Dipper: Playing live shows!  I love getting up in front of a crowd and entertaining. Doing digital concerts is fun, but it's not the same. I can't wait to play a show again.

Weslo: Who is your favorite rapper of all time?

Big Dipper: I think Nicki Minaj. I have always loved her, tho I wouldn't consider myself a Barb cause I don't start shit on Twitter lol. I also love Busta Rhymes and Missy Elliott.

Weslo: Why is body positivity so important to you?

Big Dipper: Body Positivity is self love is self confidence is good energy is happiness. It's all related to living a life that avoids as much negativity as possible. I just try to practice things in my life that lead to happiness and I think loving your body is one of those things. I never set out to spread the message of body positivity, but I'm really happy that people see that in me. It's so important to be kind to yourself and love yourself so you can put that energy out to others.  Also confidence is the magic ingredient when it comes to sexiness. I think people are sexier than they think they are, so I want everyone to love themselves and be confident, so then there is a lot more sexiness out in the world.

Weslo: Sloppy Seconds, your podcast with Meatball is an office favorite at Unleashed LGBTQ. Ya'll are always having a good time and interviewing huge names. Anyone you're dying to interview?

Big Dipper: Thanks so much for listening! I love doing the podcast and I hope Meatball does as well, lol. It's so nice to get to release a show every week where we can be ourselves and interview people we like and admire. I would love to have Leslie Jordan on the show, Bob The Drag Queen would be awesome too. I've always loved Maya Rudolph and that would be an amazing interview too.  Especially now that we are separated and recording remotely, making the show happen every week can be a bit stressful, but I'm super grateful for the platform and that I get to work with Meatball.

Shedding Light on Dark Room Collection- Interview with Paul McNulty

rs=w-400,h-400.png

As an avid underwear shopper, I’m always excited to see new brands and products as they come out. I’m blessed to live in Dallas, TX where the shops in the gayborhood are plentiful and offer a wide selection of undies, swimsuits, jocks, and fetish gear.

While browsing Instagram, I came across, none other than Dark Room Collection. This thirst trap of a post was modeled by two beefy, bearded guys: Paul McNulty (@djpjm1) and Andres Santana (@thesan_edin). So, would a sophisticated lady like myself fall for this trap?

A second later I was on the website. I was pleasantly surprised by their fresh take on, umm… everything. I found at least five items I absolutely had to have right away. Being a London-based company, it took a bit longer to get here, but in the end, it was definitely worth the wait. I fell in love with the fit, materials, and design immediately. But what I loved most was that Dark Room Collection is owned and operated by the two gorgeous models I saw on the website. Not only are they a couple in business, they’re engaged to be married.

Yes, Paul and Andres, pictured below, are obviously hot AF but also ambitious AF. The two saw an opportunity to enter a market and make their mark and they did just that. Respect, queens.

I got a chance to chat with Mr. Paul and learn how he and his sexy fiancé, Andres, came up with Dark Room Collection. Here’s what he had to say. Enjoy. ;)

Andres- @thesan_edin (left) & Paul- @djpjm1 (right)

Andres- @thesan_edin (left) & Paul- @djpjm1 (right)

Weslo: How did you come up with the idea for Dark Room Collection?

Paul: It all started with a calendar of myself that Andres shot back in 2016 (for 2017) It was done in a Dark Room setting. From there we released prints from the calendar and then a t-shirt from it. As things progressed we kept the Dark Room name and expanded on doing jockstraps, etc.

Weslo: How is Dark Room different than other gay apparel brands?

Paul: We model all our own gear. If we wouldn’t wear it ourselves we won’t sell it to our customers. We are completely hands on with it from photography, design, and even postage and packing- all done by ourselves!

Weslo: What has been the public's response to Dark Room?

Paul: Out of the gate, very positive!

Weslo: So it wasn’t difficult to break into the market?

Paul: We have been very lucky. We kind of fell into doing the brand. We both already had a big social media following and had been working with parties around the world while gogo dancing. So we already had the connections to sponsor the parties and a big target market reach for promotion! We just had to make sure we got the products right!

Weslo: Do you have a favorite product/design that you offer? What is it?

Paul: All of the brand new Violation Collection.

Violation Collection 2020

Violation Collection 2020

Weslo: Do you have any other favorite gay apparel brands?

Paul: We always love to browse around BOXER shops when we visit Berlin and Barcelona.

Weslo: Where do you get your inspiration for your designs?

Paul: A lot of the time we will have a look at what fetish gear we own and put our spin on it.

Weslo: You own and operate Dark Brand with your husband, Andres— what is that like?

Paul: Great. We definitely make a good team and have completely different skill sets that compliment each other very well.

Weslo: Has traveling as a dancer helped you spend the word about Dark Room?

Paul: 100% - most of our market is in the U.S. Around 80% of our orders. So it’s been great to get around and meet our customers. Last year I made it around to Dallas, New York, PTown, LA, LongBeach and  Minneapolis - we always seem to get a spike in customers once we have visited that city!

Weslo: What do you hope to accomplish with Dark Room and what can we expect to see in the future?

Paul: We would love to still to be around in 10 years and have some of our own shops in some of our favourite cities around the world.

Well, there it is. Enjoy the eye candy that is Paul and Andres in the photos below and follow the link to find your next circuit party gear once the Covid-19 gives us our lives back.

Product Review - TOM OF FINLAND ORGANIC VODKA

May 7, 2020

Dallas, TX

101779_tom_of_finland_vodka_500-1.jpg

Most of us are familiar with Tom of Finland, (Touko Laaksonsen) the Finnish artist and gay icon known for his homoerotic artwork. He created images of hyper-masculine bikers, sailors, and cowboys that are just as relevant today as ever. Want proof? Just stop by The Eagle on leather night and take a peek. Hell, you might even be one of them (DM me pics if so).

Tom of Finland’s name has been used to sell not only his artwork but everything from apparel to sex toys. It has been the inspiration for a feature biographical film (Tom of Finland) as well as the inspiration for many gay porn films. There is even a Tom of Finland Foundation in Los Angeles, created to preserve erotic art and advocate tolerance towards sexuality.

While shopping at my local liquor store in the gayborhood (Cedar Springs in Dallas, TX), I spot something with a very familiar name. Was it Tom of Finland? Yes! Was it a sex toy? No! It was Tom of Finland Organic Vodka. I was immediately intrigued. The bottle was equipped with the iconic artwork you would expect from the Tom of Finland brand. It included a masculine male profile rocking a leather hat, leather jacket, and a thick mustache. The bottle read: Distilled from Organic Grain (Rye and wheat to be exact). I took out my phone and with a quick google search I found this vodka is distilled using pure arctic water and made with no sugar. Sounds impressive, I thought. I went in deeper.

Tom of Finland Organic Vodka is the brainchild of One Eyed Spirits, a progressive Finnish company made up of ex ad creatives who aim to nurture brand ideas and find ways to bring them to life. Not a bad mission statement. After all, these are the same guys who brought us Ron de Jeremy Rum (yes, pornstar Ron Jeremy has his own rum).

I proceeded to check out and even with paying considerably more than I normally do for my Tito’s Handmade Vodka, I was excited to get home and give it a try. I typically put a half ounce in a shot glass for a quick taste if I’m trying a new spirit. I do this to appreciate the quality (or lack there of) even though I plan on mixing it later with Topo Chico or club soda later. What did I learn?

I can honestly say this is one of the best vodkas I’ve ever tried. I am not much of a martini drinker but after that sample the martini glasses came out. I put two ounces of Tom of Finland Organic Vodka, a bit of dry vermouth, and some ice in a shaker. I did a cute dance (seriously adorable) and poured what is now one of my favorite drinks in my fanciest martini glass.

Vodka and martini drinkers, I highly encourage you to give this one a try. While it’s not the most available product yet, you can request your local liquor store to order it from their distributor. You can also take it upon yourself to do a little cruising. I promise you this, he’s worth finding.

Staying Busy and Slaying Henny! - Rising star Stevie Boi is not letting quarantine slow him down

May 5, 2020

Dallas, TX

New York based designer Stevie Boi has gained incredible momentum in the fashion eyewear scene with SB Shades. At just 30 years old, this Augusta, GA born designer has used his over-the-top sunglasses to style some of the biggest stars including Madonna, Ke$ha, and Amber Rose. While this is exceptionally impressive, Stevie Boi is no one trick pony. He owns and operates clothing brand SK8T, and is author of Shade Built my Empire, a book about brand identity and building a business from the ground up. In his self-titled vlog, Stevie Boi, he travels the world showcasing his brand and interacts with other fashionistas making stops in Iceland, Paris, and cities all over the U.S.

Even with so much accomplished, Stevie Boi knows it is imperative for any rising star to keep their momentum if they want to have a lasting career. So when a global pandemic like COVID-19 strikes, what does he do? One word:

Werk!

We got the chance to chat with Stevie Boi about his time in quarantine and some of his latest projects. And yes, he has been staying busy. So if you’re tired of being asked “Are you still watching?” then keep reading. Stevie Boi’s work ethic is enough to make any queen hop off their throne (couch) and get back to work on those passion projects.

Weslo: What have you been doing since the quarantine started?

Stevie Boi: Work! But also lots and lots of cooking. I wanted to use this time to focus on a new book. So with that being said, a cookbook seemed like the logical next step. It’s something I’ve always wanted to sink my teeth into, lol. So I figured, why not? I have also designed two new lines.

Weslo: Yas! What’s the name of this cookbook and what makes it different?

Stevie Boi: My book is titled Stevie Boi Eats presents: Season to Taste. It’s a personal take, based on my travels around the world. I have some unique recipes I’ll be dishing out from my time in Europe, and being the Georgia peach I am, I’ll be fusing them with some southern recipes.

Weslo: Can we expect these recipes to be accompanied by some fabulous photos?

Stevie Boi: Yas Queen! 80% of the book will have photos and I’m excited to say I am working with Michael Antonio and Nikon Don, some of my favorite photographers. Because of this pandemic, we have put our shoots on hold but that won’t stop me from working on everything else I can get done in the meantime.

Weslo: What do you plan on accomplishing with this cookbook?

Stevie Boi: Most of the public knows me for my design work and for being a video personality. But if you really know me personally, you know I love to cook. I think this will introduce that part of me to the world. I have been cooking my entire life. I can’t wait for the day I get to do tours and pop ups at book stores. That seems like so much fun.

Weslo: You also mentioned you have been working on two different lines during the quarantine. What can you tell us about those?

Stevie Boi: I have been working on my current line is SK8T, of course, but I have also recently decided to plan out my next two years of collections. One of them is incredibly vibrant. I think Betsy Johnson would love it, lol. The other line is Olympic-themed and features lots of gold tones. Can’t wait for you to see it!

Weslo: Sounds fun and ambitious. Is the Olympic-theme collection workout apparel?

Stevie Boi: Its a mix of athletic gear and high fashion, same but separate, lol. You’ll know it when you see it. ;)

Weslo: You were part of film that was to be screened for SXSW 2020. We know it was canceled due to COVID-19. What can you tell us about that project?

Stevie Boi: I had a small role as a model in the film. I was promoting my P!NK Collection. I actually still haven’t seen the film myself but I know it will be fab!

Weslo: Do you have any tips for our readers on how to stay motivated during this quarantine?

Stevie Boi: Yes! I would suggest finding three hobbies a day. I like to start with cooking breakfast in the a.m. I start designing until the late afternoon and meditate before bed. I have also been using a humidifier during quarantine to improve air quality, it really helps me relax. Lastly drink lots of water! I like to add lemon and cucumbers. I love to detox at least three days out of the week.

Product Review - PURE FOR MEN

When I first heard about PURE FOR MEN, I thought what a great gimmick. It’s probably just like any fiber supplement but in this case it’s being targeted to gay men. After all, giving confidence to bottoms with promise of staying clean is something that any one on the receiving end would find appealing. Most of us have been in that position (pun intended), and it can be a quick way to kill the mood from top to bottom. You meet a guy at a bar, things get hot, and you don’t necessarily have time to tidy up. I know… tragic.

So what if there was a fiber supplement you could take daily that could keep you ready for those intimate moments no matter how spontaneous? PURE FOR MEN’s makes this very claim and with the hashtag #STAYREADY- we can all agree this is a product most of us would be happy to try. But how does it work?

Fiber is a very important part of a balanced diet. Few adults consume the recommended amount of fiber to maintain a healthy digestive system. Many of the foods high in fiber can prove to be inconvenient for the queens on the go or are just plain gross (ew). PURE FOR MEN is an all natural, vegan capsule for daily use. It’s proprietary blend of chia seeds, flax seeds, psyllium husk, and aloe vera that helps your body produce fuller movements, keeping you clean when it matters most. This blend of soluble and insoluble fiber cleans your digestive system thoroughly and reduces the time needed to get ready. Hence, #STAYREADY. But does it work?

Yas! I definitely had my reservations when I first received these supplements in the mail. I thought its extra fiber! Hell, it can’t hurt. I started a daily regimen with the recommended dose, 3 capsules and 16 oz of water. The results? After a week of taking PURE FOR MEN I noticed a considerable difference in both my movements and in my confidence when bottoming. No extended time needed for prepping and no mess after the fact. For a bigger guy like myself (5’10, 205 lbs.) I wasn’t quite sure if the recommended amount would make a difference. I eat fairly healthy and have a fast metabolism, even at 36 years old. I can say my metabolism is even faster and I’m happy to say I have even dropped a few pounds since I have started taking the daily dose. Now I’m feeling confident for other reasons entirely.

PURE FOR MEN offers a variety of products beyond supplements to help you feel fresh and of course #STAYREADY. The charcoal-activated soap is a personal favorite. Its a natural deodorizer that removes access oils and bacteria and leaves your hiney smelling fresh as a daisy. Other products include an organic, non-GMO scrub to exfoliate your every “nook and cranny”, as they put it, charcoal infused wipes that eliminate odors, and I can honestly say the lube is one of the best on the market.

I give two very enthusiastic bums up to PURE FOR MEN. You can order products individually or save vodka soda money by purchasing the Stay Ready Collection that comes with a variety of goodies at www.pureformen.com

Also be sure to follow their social media for more on new products, deals, and lots of eye candy. And remember! #STAYREADY queens!

RIDE LUBE joins Unleashed LGBTQ Expo

Joining us March 28-29, 2020 at Unleashed LGBTQ Expo is Ride Lube.

RIDE BODYWORX offers one the highest quality personal lubricants I have found on the market. I was fortunate to have already known the marketing director Erik Vasquez. At the time I knew him as the president of Impulse Group Dallas. He was one of the first people I met in moving to Dallas with a larger than life personality and smile more contagious than mono at Pride. He offered our office some samples to take home and after a night or two of very exhilarating experimentation we offered a space to Erik and RIDE LUBE.

We are all very excited to see what he will bring to Unleashed LGBTQ Expo in March. Samples? Models? Slip and Slide? We’ll have to be patient and see.

RIDE BODYWORX offers a variety products including personal lubricants, performance gel and spray, grooming products, apparel and more.

Wolf Daddy Apparel

Wolf Daddy Apparel started off like many social media pages. Providing motivational quotes and positive content was the initial goal of founder, David Stowe. David said he was known in the community as someone who would “literally give the shirt off his back.” And if I may say, with that body, seeing him shirtless will not get any complaints, at least not from any of the queens I know. David was convinced the next logical step was to create Wolf Daddy Apparel.

“As I worked through this, It seems to me that many clothing brands have lost some of their originality and no longer draw the attention of those seeking new ideas. In some cases, profit has trumped quality on brands with the customers losing the value they originally enjoyed, leaving them to search out new brands of higher quality and purpose.”

His mission became clear. To provide quality apparel at reasonable prices with personal messages that resonate with you. Just as WolfDaddyTX shares motivational messages and new ways to look at old problems, it is hoped that the Wolf Daddy logo, designs and slogans remind you that there are always positive ways to view, set and achieve your goals & your dreams. Some of our designs are edgy and humorous, but that's O.K. It never hurts to laugh a little bit while starting new conversations with old and new friends.

David stresses the importance of being proud of who you are. He is one who understands what it takes to be ones best self and hopes he can spread his positive message through his products.
